Origins of the term 'Swamp Yankee'

Having grown up in Rhode Island, I've heard the term 'Swamp Yankee' my whole life. I assumed that everyone knew and understood this term. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. Take a moment and read the history of Swamp Yankee.
